WHEN WE THINK OF WELLNESS, we most often think of physical wellness. At Speakwell, we believe there are other kinds of wellness such as financial wellness and community or global wellness. To that end we are including a financial section in each issue along with some very worthwhile causes under the heading of "Global Wellness" that we invite you to consider. Take a look at each one and decide if there is something you could throw your support behind. « The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being. And we, in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually. » :: Greg Anderson

Can we all get along?

WHEN HURRICANE HANNAH separated two ultra-prosh white tigers, Mitra and Shiva, from their mother, Anjana came to the rescue. Anjana, a chimp at TIGERS [The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species ] in South Carolina, became surrogate mom and playmate to the cubs, even helping with bottle feeding. But here's the truly amazing part: Anjana does this all the the time, having raised leopard and lion cubs.

Anjana's caregiver, China York, raised Anjana who has mimicked her human caregiver in caring for other animals at the institute, such as the new born white tiger cubs.

Hoops of Hope

WHEN AUSTIN GUTWEIN was 9 years old, all he really wanted was to make his school's hoops team. He didn't ... but he did rebound. Austin had an African pen pal, a little boy whose letters encouraged Austin to learn more about Africa — which he did, including the really tough stuff, like children losing their parents to the AIDS epidemic.

"I really started to think about what it would be like if I lost my parents."

So Austin decided he'd raise money for Africa's orphans by shooting foul shots for one day, sort of like a walkathon. He raised $3,000.

But Austin knew $3,000 wouldn't go far, so he found a charity, World Vision, to help him spread the word. He calls his organization Hoops of Hope.

"It's a problem that most kids think can't be helped, but we can do a little, and that's what a lot of people saw," says Austin about his success.
