THE PERFECT STORM — It was a movie released in 2000 that starred George Clooney. I saw it.

I also saw the report released on January 26, 2010 by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, titled: A Perfect Storm of Heart Disease Looming on Our Horizon. The report cites some genuinely grave statistics, (read the article by Dr. Martin Collis, Survey Says: Canadians of All Ages Fatter and Less Fit than Ever). If ever Canadians were to sit up (perhaps stand up) and take notice, now would be the time.

Peter Mansbridge of the CBC’s, The National, said he was shocked by these statistics. I don’t know why — health professionals have trumpeted the state of our country’s declining health for years. Perhaps no one, or very few of us, are listening.

But what can we do? Is it too late? Is there hope?

First, it is never too late to start doing what is right!

Second, we need to start eating properly. In the words of Michael Pollan, in his book, In Defense of Food, he says, “Eat food, mostly plants, not too much.” Simply, we need to get away from processed, chemically enhanced and fortified nutrition and learn to cook again from real food, the things your grandmother would recognize as food. (Watch the TED video in our Jamie Oliver article).

Third, we need to exercise more — not to lose weight (that will happen from proper eating). No, we need to exercise because it is good for us on so many fronts. Exercise is good for our hearts, our brains, and our circulatory systems and reduces stress. It prevents the onset of some cancers and diabetes and on and on.

To that end, Pacific Rim Wellness will, until June 1st, 2010 offer a $5 discount on our regularly priced $19 H-215 pedometer. This is a great saving since on June 1st the HST will likely be in place affecting our out-of-province orders.

Finally, this issue is full of wonderful and insightful articles — 3 of which we have highlighted above — but overall too much for a single sitting. We would encourage you to keep coming back to this issue over a number of weeks, if necessary, to read all of the content.

As always, welcome to our new subscribers and those providing content.

Have a wonderful spring season and may you feel a sense of renewal and hope.
